Our weekend project

This weekend we moved our family room TV from the corner near the  the kitchen to the opposite side of the room. And it was so easy - one trip to Walmart for a splitter, a leftover hunk of cable that we already had in the basement, and half an hour of time - most of it waiting for the cable box to cycle back on. Everyone knows what an accomplishment it is for us to do anything remotely resembling a home improvement project without help. Usually, when we have something that needs to be fixed we just invite a family member over for "dinner". I know other people can replace the entire front door in a weekend (my sister) but we don't want to overdo it.

I was hoping that moving the TV would help with the noise level in our house, and the improvement is incredible. You can't even hear it from the kitchen - this is huge when our family computer, and thus homework central, is the kitchen table. Sometimes location is everything....

  1. Just curious, do your family members ever resent being invited over for "dinner" only to be roped into a task?

I'm not saying this to be mean or to call you out, but I'm just thinking of my sibling who gets called a LOT for jobs like that -- cleaning the pool, garage, moving, etc.... and he resents being asked over on a pretense of not knowing he's going to have to work.

That being said, he's grown used to it and now pretends he is busy when he doesn't want to do anything for them, but he certainly feels resentful that there's always a catch.

  2. No they don't ever mind coming to help! The trick is to every once in a while through in a dinner where there isn't any work to do. Besides most of the time dinner is pretty good!

  3. Haha, thanks anonymous family! But FB, you bring up a good point - although I have that kind of relationship with my sisters and their husbands, I would never consider doing that to my husband's family. Different families, different rules....
